From the sub-Antarctic to southern New Zealand, the SHADOWLANDS are a diverse group of habitats in the remote southern latitudes of our planet. Here high-stakes wildlife dramas play out in snow-capped fiords where saltwater mixes with fresh, where warm currents meet cold Antarctic waters. Here, the world’s most southerly bottlenose dolphins and the rare Fiordland crested penguins make their home, while Great white sharks patrol the coasts and on the ocean floor a mass migration of spider crabs getS under way. These creatures must be tough to endure the extreme weather here at the best of times, but increasingly unpredictable climate patterns are making their lives even harder. Those who are born in the cold southern seas need all their animal cunning to grow up and ensure their kind survives in the SHADOWLANDS.

Osprey: Sea Raptor

On the east coast of North America an osprey soars over a tiny saltmarsh at the delta of the Connecticut River. He has just flown 6000 kilometres, to the place that’s imprinted on his memory since birth, the place where he will re-join his mate. As the reunited pair mates and broods their eggs, foxes, deer and scores of migrating shorebirds bring summer’s hustle and bustle back to the saltmarsh. Other osprey pairs see their eggs snatched by predators that prowl the night. But this osprey pair are battle tested. Over the course of one summer, they fend off enemies, catch hundreds of fish, and raise their tiny chicks into the next generation of sea raptors.
